Kitchen Counter

This is a picture of my painted counter top. It was a sweet light blue, with pink and grey swirls all through it. Not my taste at all. So I decided, since new ones were out of the question, I would just paint the old ones. I think it turned out pretty good. It was super quick and easy, and made a huge difference. It has held up amazingly good. So if you want the new counter top look, but don't want to buy new counter tops, I would recommend a little paint.

Wow! I want to know your secrets! What kind of paint did you use? Did you need a special top coat? Very good!

Here are the instructions....
Step 1: Sand countertops to give it a "tooth" for paint to hold onto. I just lightly sanded mine.

Step 2: Wash countertop really good, it is best to use a degreaser. Make sure it is rinsed well.

Step 3: Prime whole countertop with a good quality primer. (I used white kiltz brand) let it completely dry.

Step 4: Paint base coat. I rolled it with a roller and used Knap weed by Kwall and Howell. Let it completely dry.

Step 5: sponge first color. I just used acrylic paint that you can buy at any craft store. Mine was a dark brown (asphaltum by Americana). I used a natural sea sponge. Then after it dries (it dries really fast) I sponged on a lighter color brown (butter pecan by folkart), then I just lightly sponged gold paint, sparingly to make it pop. It really added depth and a natural stone look. Let all of it dry at least over night to make sure it is totally dry.

Step 5: Seal it. I used minwax. I did 3-4 coats, letting it dry completely in-between. Minwax doesn't have a really strong smell, but it helps to open the windows J Let it dry for a couple of days before you put anything heavy on it.

Lesley your countertops look so awesome, maybe I could convince Wes to helpme, we need a change. Our brass light fixtures are looking a little outdated!! Maybe new countertops would be a good place to start. You are so creative.
